At the heart of the Mid North Coast region, the Pacific Highway is an ever improving freeway linking the myriad of sparkling bays and laid back country towns. A turn to the east of the Pacific Highway opens up to a stretch of uncrowded sand and a soft breeze of salt air. Any turn west will meander through rustic villages rich in history nestled amongst valleys and rainforests with stunning backdrops of lofty waterfalls and the sounds of bellbirds echoing across the ridges. Apart from its iconic beach and hinterland landscapes, the region boasts some 25 national parks and reserves, each home to a diverse range of Australian native flora and fauna.
Port Stephens is a wonderland for all things marine and the perfect destination for boating and fishing. The coastline is also famous for being the ideal place to witness the annual whale migration or see playful dolphins frolicking. Port Stephens is home to a unique playground, the coastal desert wilderness of Stockton Sand Dunes, which is ideal for four-wheel driving whether it’s independently or on a tour.
As the name suggests, Great Lakes is entrusted with the clear waters of Wallis, Smiths and Myall lakes. Encircled by a number of national parks, which bring the forests down to the waterline, the lakes are an enchanting combination for those who simply want to enjoy nature at its best.
Explore the ancient forests of the Taree hinterland or the majesty of the Comboyne Plateau and Ellenborough Falls. While touring this rural setting, drop into a roadside farm stall or visit the historic town of Wingham. Stroll along the coastal rainforests right on a beach at Sea Acres in Port Macquarie or soak up the growing cultural scene. Further up the Pacific Coast are the historic Trial Bay Goal and Smokey Lighthouse at South West Rocks or turn west into the hinterland between Kempsey and Nambucca Valley into Australia’s scenic rural countryside.
The picturesque Bellinger Valley is the dramatic Great Escarpment where areas of lush rainforest and spectacular waterfalls create the landscape for the World Heritage listed Dorrigo National Park. All this clings to the cliffs, which are the backdrop to the magnificent Coffs Harbour. Stretching along the Coffs Coast is one of Australia’s most exciting dive locations – the Solitary Islands Marine Park, here is nature’s showcase where glorious tropical fish flash past in a riot of shapes and colours.
